Eye On Training Camp
Tidbits from the Dome
Camp Notes: 9/15 --
D'Arcy McGrath

Coach and general manager Darryl Sutter is generally a man of few words. That isn't to say that said man can't create a little conversation however, as his few words often lead to plenty of speculation and iference building.

Some topics from the Dome ...

Waiver Draft

With some of the signings this summer many have talked about the Flames list and who may or not be protected when each club has to form their lists in early October. With three youngish defencemen (Mike Commodore, Steve Montador and Jesse Wallin) all battling for a few spots the Flames could end up losing one of them via the NHL's annual talent swap.

When the topic was brought up at the Dome, Sutter actually hinted that Martin Gelinas may be exposed, a comment that had journalists scratching their heads. He didn't name the player by name, but did put the picture together by mentioning his position and his salary.

MCI Disconnect

Fans and media alike are enjoying the return engagement of the 2001-02 super line of Dean McAmmond, Craig Conroy and Jarome Iginla ... one may suggest getting a glimpse while you can.

Speculation at the Dome has the reunited line doing the paces now so that Sutter can show it won't work, leaving the wily coach to build the lines as he sees fit, and not how the market would like to see it.

This writer has often suggested that three veterans should never be on the same line on a club that is looking to move two young players into their top six -- too much inexperience for one line.

Dome at the Dome

Robert Dome hasn't exactly stood out so far into the 2003 Flames training camp, but the stalled prospect does have an inside lane to making the Flames if he can stand out in the preseason games.

Dome is capable of playing all three forward positions, a key fact in an organization that is very thin down the middle.

Should Blair Betts make the club, only Matthew Lombardi is left for a call up situation, and the talk at the Dome has Sutter preferring another full year of AHL duty for the young Quebec grad.

Don't Get Your Backup!

Two NHL level goalie on one way contracts makes the race for the club's backup position a no-brainer, right?

Think again.

Darryl Sutter has been very quick to block any media suggestion that contract situations will play any role in the sweepstakes to caddy for Roman Turek.

Dany Sabourin may in fact have a good shot at supplant Jamie McLennan and spend his first year in Calgary, although one also has to consider the possibility that Sutter is using glib statements to light a fire under the veteran.

If Sabourin made the Flames, they've have the option of sending Brent Krahn to Lowell and then let McLennan play out the string with the ECHL Las Vegas Wranglers.

Stay tuned.

Roman Tests

The club isn't about to beat their chests on this little bit of side news from the fitness testing, but Roman Turek actually finished all his tests this year, a feat he couldn't claim last fall.

His number aren't such that the club is due to issue a media release, but the completion ratio is a step in the right direction for the number one keeper.

Doing the Dion

Observers can tell that number one pick Dion Phaneuf is used to working out for the Sutter family.

The 6'2"+ defenceman is attacking every drill at 100% speed, never leaving a drop in the gas tank. He also hasn't been shy, seen attacking both Craig Conroy and Jarome Iginla in one on one drills, and getting the better of the two on the majority of instances.

Word has Sutter sending all the junior players back to their clubs prior to the first exhibition game against Edmonton ... save for Phaneuf who may suite up that night before returning to Red Deer for their season opener on Friday night. The Rebels play in Calgary on Friday making the move to another dressing room pretty easy.
