When the Flames traded for Jarome Iginla in early December of 1995 I was shocked. I had no idea who the guy was, I think the radio DJ on an FM station butchered his name at the time, and that didn’t help. Joe Niewendyk was an amazing player and he was gone.

Assumptions are almost always dangerous.
When a scientist takes a key variable and applies an assumption any hypothesis or result that comes from testing will only as valid as that assumption, meaning the very nature of the assumption could render his life’s work completely useless.
And really what is a hockey team, and the building of a hockey team than that of an experiment? An experiment in drafting, developing, projecting, and team building. An ability to assess the growth of a team’s prospects, the development of players on their roster, the shape of a roster both this season, next season, in two seasons and in ten.

In social issues, politics and even sports public opinion is tough to assess.
People can be polled one way, but react another when choices involve actions and not just a quick answer. The silent majority can quite often be poorly represented by the loud minority who take to the streets, start web based petitions or create youtube videos slagging their favorite targets. Don’t even get me started on the “no comment” group that for whatever reason agree to answer a poll but then have no opinion in filling in the answer; nobody can help them.
To date the NHL and the NHLPA have attempted, I’d argue largely in vain, to win the hearts of the hockey fan in a way to gain leverage in a dispute that today has become 11 days old. It’s not working.
Journalists like any other professionals come from writing programs in learning institutions, and are often in unions themselves.
They aren’t biased, they’re not jaded, and they don’t have an axe to grind. They simply see life from a certain perspective and because of that they can’t help but write opinion pieces from that perspective.
Similarly, many Calgarypuck readers toil downtown some in the tech industry, engineering firms, many from oil and gas and we too have a view that is similarly evolved from being in certain circles, having certain conversations, and forming certain opinions.

Nobody likes a wet blanket.
People get hyped up for certain events in the sporting calendar and Canada Day is certainly one of them with the free agent frenzy, 16 hour news cycles, and teams completely remade with the stroke of a few ball point pens.
It’s a blast. It’s exciting to see your club add a big name … and it adds to a summer to be able to sit on the beach with a cold one and imagine the new line combinations that will be front and center in early October.
But this year? Stay away from tvs and the internet (did I just say that?!) because there just won’t be much to see.
