Flames Name Hartley Bench Boss

But I thought he was going to Montreal?

It was too obvious wasn’t it? Jay Feaster’s old friend, god-father to his son, … he wouldn’t do that. He wouldn’t hire the “in” guy, the obvious guy.

Yes yes he would, and that fact was made official late this morning when the Flames called a 12.30pm press conference to introduce Bob Hartley as the new head coach for the Calgary Flames.

Was it a good hire? Is he the right guy for the job? Is there a right guy for the job?

McGrath Musings 2/16/12

February 16th, 2012 | Posted in Commentary | By: D'Arcy McGrath

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks in Calgary with the Flames getting more and more depleted in bodies but piling up more and more points.

Sure the club may have been lucky in Vancouver, but deserve full marks for their warm belt road trip, and a solid effort against Toronto on home ice.

As a result they don’t need to be that “lights out” the rest of the way in order to secure a playoff spot, much to the contrary of what this writer assumed when they were a .500 club through 40 odd games. Improbable to say the least. – Full Article –

Flames Bring Back Cammalleri

January 12th, 2012 | Posted in Commentary | By: D'Arcy McGrath

Remember, it’s MM and LL.

As a writer certain names are easy to spell regardless of the name’s length or complexity, and others the exact opposite; quite simply impossible to learn no matter how many times you correct yourself.

During the Flames- Blues matchup last night the fellas at Sportsnet put up a graphic showing the standings in the NHL at Thanksgiving last season; three West teams out of playoff spots recovered to secure them.

So no problem for the Flames right? Stay the course!

This time I don’t think so; things feel different. And boy am I glad! – Full Article –

Prediction Time: A Season Full of “Ifs”

October 6th, 2011 | Posted in Commentary | By: D'Arcy McGrath

I can’t put it off any longer, it’s prediction time.

The puck is to be dropped in three locals tonight, two European locals tomorrow night and at the Saddledome on Saturday. Every major hockey or sports publication or online portal has ventured into the fray and put down their bullet list of playoff clubs in the NHL for the 2011-12 season.

It’s a frustrating time of year as a hockey fan is made to wade through a lot of “expert” opinions that honestly don’t pass the smell test of the average three Dome beer deep fan. They don’t do the leg work, they don’t understand individual team dynamics, and clearly their producers and/or editors suffer the same fate.
