With three games in three nights ending last night with a shoot out loss in Vancouver, it marked the time to get serious about shaping an NHL roster.

With the newly minted Abbotsford Heat starting up their preseason schedule on Friday and the Flames now only eight nights from opening night changes were in order.

Phaneuf-gate .. Dion Has It Right

I’ll be the first to admit that the bone jarring hit absorbed by Kyle Okposo on Thursday night was a little tough to watch.

The kid hit a wall, and hit it hard. I cringed. Then I “hooted” and returned to cringing. The last time the Islanders were in town Okposo was quoted in both Calgary papers as idolizing Jarome Iginla growing up. It was a good story, he is a good kid.

You don’t want to see people hurt.

Flames Camp: Spotless September?

With the drop of a puck at the Saddledome on Wednesday morning, summer in Calgary was officially over, and a new hockey season had begun.

For many, August is the longest month on the calendar regardless of weather or cabin destination.

With September comes the long awaited look at a rebuilt Flames club, and the first answers to some off season questions surrounding the team and how it will fare in 2009-10.

However, don’t look for any roster spot intrique this fall.

A Summer of Change; Sutter Reshapes Flames Roster

Coming into the summer of 2009, one wouldn’t expect a whole lot of change from the Calgary Flames.

They had one of the most spread out cores locked down on multi-year, largely no movement contracts. They seemed to be set in almost all positions after some simple house keeping.

They had a coach on the last year of his contract, and a few budding prospects looking to make the jump and fill in the holes.

TSN Reporting Flames Land Bouwmeester

Well you have to hand it to Darryl Sutter and the Flame’s ownership group, they gambled at a sleepy draft and won big.

Sources were telling TSN that the Flames have taken the prized fish off the UFA market about 18 hours before the gun is fired in signing Jay Bouwmeester to a five year contract. Further details on the contract were not released at the time of this article.
