What’s the call ref?

Probably the most scrutinized position in all of professional sports is that of the official. Any time an official makes a mistake it enrages fans, it spurs arguments over whether or not the official’s blown call cost a team the game. On Saturday night, the Flames and Canucks were a centre of this sort of debate. There are two components to this discussion: first the way that NHL officials call the game as it stands; and second, why the NHL is so hung up on tweaking the rules to increase scoring.

“Calgary Flames, an under achieving hockey club. A team challenged in a crucial game seven shows up barely alive. Gentlemen, we can rebuild them. We may not have the cap space. Yet we have the capability to build the city’s first “past the first round” hockey club in four years. The 2008-09 Calgary Flames will be that hockey club. Better than they were before. Younger, bigger, faster.”

Could Calgary’s Draft Record Be Improving?

Some teams are known for their drafting record.

The Colorado Avalanche, the New Jersey Devils under David Conte, year over year find a great player in the first round, but then others further down. Their bust quotients are never that high, their cupboards always restocked.

Other franchises, including all three Western Canadian clubs have the exact opposite when it comes to gem finding performance, making competitiveness a battle year in and year out.

But could that be changing, at least in Alberta?

The Cost of Winning; ’89 Team in ’08 Dollars

The dog days of summer have arrived.

Though the city of Calgary has yet to see any sustained summer temperatures, the calendar suggests it’s high time to grab the flip flops and towel and leave hockey behind for a few weeks. The draft is a thing of the past, the free agent cupboard is picked almost bare, and training camps still sit almost eight weeks away.
