This doesn’t feel right.

An enemy is in our midst and you are feeling that itchy scratchy feeling all over.

I get that. We all get that. But Darryl Sutter could care less. And good for him.

This writer will never forgive the Vancouver Canucks, Marc Crawford, Brad May or Todd Bertuzzi for the most heinous over reaction in modern NHL history. Their captain, Marcus Naslund was lit up after dishing the puck in Denver. The hit was over the top, it was fierce, and it was was vicious but it was within current NHL rules. California Dreaming for 2nd Pick

The Flames went to the hockey factory of Seal Beach, California for their second choice in the 2008 draft, a pick they reaquired from Los Angeles in the Mike Cammelleri trade (they returned the 2nd round picked up from Montreal in the Tanguay trade to L.A. in the 2009 draft).

That’s right … California.

When Wayne Gretzky was traded to Hollywood in August of 1988 many felt that their would be a boom of hockey interest in the Southern California area. Celebrities started showing up at hockey games, and then 20 years later you see what we see today; California born and raised hockey players entering the NHL draft.

Flames Complete Draft Day Moves with Pick; Greg Nemisz

Coming into the draft many Calgary fans thought a tiny little guy with speed would likely be the Flames pick on Friday night.

The club held down the 17th overall pick, and with the binge of defensemen expected to get snatched up before them the thought process was dead on in taking a forward. The Flames, a team lacking in up front skill at the moment could use a dose of pepper pot explosives, or so the theory went.

Instead the team moved back in the draft, a move that shed them 2 million in salary and saw them swap left wingers Alex Tanguay for Mike Cammalleri in separate deals. As a result they moved back eight spots to 25th overall and drafted Windsor Spitfire center Greg Nemisz.

Flames Steal Early Draft Attention With Two Deals

Two years ago, at the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Flames fans were caught off guard when TSN opened their draft coverage with a trade announcement.

“Alex Tanguay has been traded to …. the Calgary Flames for Jordan Leopoold” … and of course a package of 2nd round picks.
