Consternation or Evolution – Are the Flames Gearing Up for the Playoffs?

A nerve wracking finish to a hockey team’s playoff hopes is a great and exhilarating thing… once it’s over, once it’s successful, and both participants and fans are discussing it over cold ones either the next day or in cutoffs on a lake dock.

While the event is actually playing out it’s pretty much no fun for anyone.

Time For a Make Over

There is something wrong.

Darryl Sutter has been in no rush to admit it, his actions over the past 14 months have done anything but pay homage to it, but the fact remains, she’s broken and she needs fixed.

When building a sports franchise, more often than not the things that need improving are as obvious as the nose on one’s face. The Tampa Bay Lightning need goaltending, the Los Angeles Kings need patience and time, the Toronto Maple Leafs need to start over from square one.

Buyer or Seller?

A season should never hang on one result in February, but that heart stopping come from behind spectacle against the Coyotes the other night has really demonstrated the difference between success and failure in today’s NHL.

A loss, which looked more than likely 50 minutes in, would have put the Flames in 9th spot, on the outside looking in and in a battle to make the post season.

The win, instead puts them in that 5/6th range in projection, and right in the middle between teams looking to contend and teams scrambling to make the playoffs. They look good to see the post season, but they certainly don’t look good enough to make some noise once they arrive.

Who Let the “Dog” In?

The Flames have finally managed to put a leash on their dog.

Curtis Joseph, affectionately known as Cujo; a clever little hip hop grab of his two names to mirror a classic Stephen King novel, is back within the Flames fold and should provide an interesting element to the Flames final 40% of their schedule.

Five and a half years ago Joseph was a Flame for about 12 hours, an astute little acquisition by Craig Button to upgrade draft picks and create an asset out of the NHL’s old free agency laws, but the man never saw the ice. The dog was corralled, but he somehow slipped through the fence.
