Game Takes: Flames 3 Ducks 2 (OT)

WE CAN’T LOSE HERE.

After what 40 games of absolute chaos in a building the Flames won their 9th straight in the Honda Center tonight with a Jonathan Huberdeau overtime winner in a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night.

The game was overshadowed by 35 moms on a road trip to start, and a devastating knee on knee injury to Connor Zary in the second period, putting a damper on things.

The Flames play again tomorrow night in Los Angeles.

Calgary and Vancouver tied for the final wild card spot with 45 points, the Canucks with the edge with one less game played.

Game Takes: Predators 4 Flames 1

Pretty sure this is my fault.

When the Flames beat the Canucks on New Year’s Eve I changed camps. I was never on the cheer for a loss bandwagon, but I was certainly on the cheer for a win, and if a loss happens so be it group. But after that win I changed colours; the team was in a playoff spot in 2025 it was time to throw the shoulder behind the thing.

And with that back to back regulation losses, including tonight’s 4-1 loss to the Nashville Predators.

The Flames were the better team pretty much from start to finish, but they couldn’t convert on their chances and gave up two powerplay goals on just two chances.

That was rowdy!

The teams were feeling it. The crowd was feeling it.

And with that you get a great hockey game.

The Flames full money for a 3-1 victory on New Year’s Eve, incredibly putting them into a playoff spot for January 1st, 2025. Didn’t see that coming.

They continue to make a mockery of the preseason predictions.

Good on them. They’re doing it with young players; tonight great games again from Dustin Wolf, Connor Zary, Matt Coronato and Kevin Bahl.

Game Takes: Knights 3 Flames 0

Back to backs … with start times 22 hours apart … in a building where you haven’t fared well … against arguably the best team in the National Hockey League is a tough set up for a hockey game.

So it comes as no surprise that the Flames dropped a 3-0 game in Vegas on Sunday night.

But that wasn’t the full story.

The game was close, very close, until the final five minutes when Vegas turned a 1-0 game into a two goal lead and then added an empty netter.

The Flames were full marks for the effort and for hanging in with tired legs.

Game Takes: Flames 3 Sharks 1

December 28th, 2024 | Posted in Game Takes | By: D'Arcy McGrath

If you have aspirations of making the playoffs, even in a season where most had you out of it early, you had better beat bad teams.

The Sharks are about as bad as they come these days in the National Hockey League.

Calgary dominated the first 40 minutes, but weren’t rewarded as they had a 2-1 lead despite a huge lead in shots and scoring chances.

But instead of an easy cushion they ground out another close Calgary Flames win, beating the Sharks 3-1 with two goals from Jonathan Huberdeau and some heroic last minute saves from Dustin Wolf.

The improbable season continues!
